Dumpsters, Dirt, and High-Vis: That Time We Toured a Landfill

As a marketing agency, a lot of our magic happens behind a screen. We tweak colors, perfect layouts, and polish copy until it's just right. But nothing beats the spark of inspiration that happens when you pack up your gear, step out of the office, and walk straight into a client's world!

Earlier this summer, part of the Phaser Crew (Chad, Josie, Joe, and myself) decided to go see where the magic actually happens. We spent a full day shadowing Joe Uran, co-owner of Nordic Waste, to see what it actually takes to move mountains of heavy-duty debris across the Twin Cities.

Spoiler alert: It requires a lot less magic and a lot more massive horse-power.

1. The Ultimate Game of Tetris

We started the day watching these trucks handle roll-off containers. Honestly? It’s basically high-stakes arcade Tetris, but with heavy metal and hydraulic fluid. Watching a driver perfectly drop and swap a massive bin in a tight space is strangely mesmerizing.

2. Joe Uran, Master of the Trash Universe

This is Joe Uran. Not only does he co-own the operation, but he spent the day dropping serious knowledge on us about metro waste streams and logistics. Also, look closely at that dumpster. See the QR code? Nordic has high-tech operations built right into the steel.

3. Safe, Bright, and Ready to Blend In

You can't just stroll into a landfill wearing your standard office attire. Behold: Chad, Josie, and Joe looking like a neon-yellow boyband ready to drop the hottest logistics album of 2026. Safety first, fashion second (or a distant third).

4. Talk Trash to Me

Here’s Joe giving us the real talk on what happens behind the scenes. If you think running a business is hard, try doing it while managing environmental regulations, sorting tons of concrete, and predicting the chaotic waste habits of the entire Twin Cities metro. The man is a tactical genius in an orange vest.

5. The "Holy Crap, That's a Lot of Garbage" View

Finally, we stood on the top of a massive landfill in Shakopee, MN. Standing here really hits you with the sheer scale of modern civilization. It’s a massive, highly engineered operation to keep the metro clean, and seeing those giant bulldozers working the hills puts the whole world into perspective.

The Verdict?

We had a blast. Huge shoutout to Joe Uran and the Nordic Waste team for letting us tag along, ask an obnoxious amount of questions, and breathe in a little landfill air for the day.
